Online Decibel Meter
Measure how loud your environment is right from your browser. Allow microphone access and the meter shows a live decibel (dB) reading with peak tracking and a colour-coded hearing-safety scale. Your audio never leaves your device.
Allow microphone access to start. The reading is an uncalibrated estimate from your device mic — useful as a relative guide, not a certified measurement.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is an online decibel meter?
A browser-based meter uses your device microphone, which is not calibrated like a professional SPL meter, so treat readings as a useful relative guide rather than a certified measurement. Most phone mics also cap out around 100–105 dB.
What is a safe decibel level?
Sound below about 70 dB is generally safe for continuous exposure. Above 85 dB, prolonged exposure can damage hearing, and the risk rises quickly as levels climb. The meter colour-codes readings to show when levels enter the caution and danger zones.
Does the decibel meter store my audio?
No. The meter analyses microphone input live in your browser. No audio is recorded or uploaded.
Why does it need microphone access?
Measuring sound level requires reading the live signal from your microphone, so the browser asks for microphone permission. The signal is only used to calculate the on-screen dB value.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in mobile Chrome and Safari. For a dedicated app experience with peak history, try the Measure Decibels iOS app.
